Contest Rules & Regulations

Guidelines

Please read the guidelines carefully before entering the competition.

  1. Submission of your entry implies acceptance of all the rules & regulations of the Prize.

  2. Once submitted, entries cannot be changed or edited in any way. 

  3. Writers can choose to withdraw by emailing admin@harambeeliteraryprize.com

  4. Only short stories written in English are admissible for this competition.

  5. The stipulated word count is 1500 to 5000 words. Entries below or above the limits will be disqualified.

  6. Writers are required to indicate the word count at the top right corner of the first page of their entry.

  7. An entry fee of $5 is payable through the website’s secure platform for each entry.

  8. Refunds are not issued for non-winning, disqualified or withdrawn entries.

  9. All entries are submitted using the website portal. Submissions via email will not be considered.

  10. All entries are judged anonymously. Please do not include any personal identifying details eg. name, address, phone number etc on the manuscript. Personal info will be collected via the online entry portal.

  11. A maximum of 2 entries per writer is acceptable. Entry fees are applicable for each entry.

*The prize will be sent to the winner through PayPal, Flutterwave, Bank Transfer or M-Pesa.

Word Count

The word count is 1500 to 5000 words. The title, appendix, and Glossary of Terms is not included in the word count. 

Entries with a word count below or above the stipulated limits will not be considered.

Format

  1. Add the word count to the top right corner of the first page.
  2. Do not add a cover page or title pages.
  3. Use Times New Roman font, 12pt, black.
  4. Double line spaced.
  5. Number the pages in the centre at the bottom of the page.
  6. Save the file as a Word document or PDF format.
  7. The file name should be exactly as the title of the story.
  8. Do not include your name or any other personal details in the file title.
  9. For untitled works, name the file using the first 5 words of the story.

Judging

1. The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence will be entered into. 

2. Judges are unable to comment on individual entries, but will comment on the top 3 winning entries. 

3. Judging is fair and unbiased. The judges will be blinded as regards personal details of authors.

4. The Harambee Literary Prize reserves the right to change the panel of judges without notice.

Copyright

Worldwide copyright of each entry remains with the author, but the Harambee Literary Prize reserves unrestricted rights to publish the winning and highly commended entries in its anthology series.
